A SESSION FOR PUBLIC INTEREST LAWYERS WORKING IN LAW FIRMS¡¯

On the 16th of May, 2008, a meeting for the promotion of Pro Bono programs in law firms was held in the conference chamber of HORIZON LAW GROUP(Ji-Pyung) under the auspices of Gonggam, with the attendance of Martin Curtis, a lawyer at LawWorks(Solicitors Pro Bono Group), a British organization for public interest and human rights law.

LawWorks was founded to support and reinforce Pro Bono programs in the British legal profession, and is leading the field in Britain with vigorous initiatives. Major British law firms, such as Berwin Geighton Paisner LLP, Holman Fenwick & Willan, Simons Muirhead & Burton, and distinguished corporations including HSBC group, Lloyds, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone, are taking part in Pro Bono programs in cooperation with LawWorks.

Eight Korean law firms participated in this meeting; Kim & Chang, Bae, Kim & Lee(Tae-Pyung-Yang), Yoon Yang Kim Shin & Yu(Haw-U), Hwang Mok Park(Choong-Jung), Lee & Ko(Gwang-Jang), HANKYUL, Christian Law Office of Kyeong & Jeon(So-Myung), and Horizon Law Group(Ji-Pyung). This session was especially meaningful since it was the very first time lawyers who work in the human rights sector gathered to discuss Pro Bono programs. Further meeting were agreed to be held on a regular basis.

Gonggam plans to arrange regular sessions for human rights lawyers employed by law firms, and to continuously seek ways to promote Pro Bono programs within firms in cooperation with other lawyers.
